Years ago, there was an ambitious desire: Some of us want to change the world by changing the lives of young people, especially those we call “at risk.” Today, with the help of a wonderful group of dedicated people, that desire has been transformed into a reality: FIGHTERS FOR THE WORLD. But our journey, and our work, is far from over. In an ideal world, every child has two supportive parents who provide love, guidance, and friendly-but-firm age-appropriate boundaries. In an ideal world, children have clear values and can easily say “thanks but no thanks” to negative or questionable influences. Of course, the real world is far from ideal. At a time when their brains are still developing, their values still forming, many adolescents must cope with an array of difficulties: turbulent family situations, shaky self-esteem, moral confusion, peer pressure, and dangerous or risky friendships. A sense of alienation from their families, schools and communities is common. Self-criticism, often extremely harsh, is everywhere, as are so-called recreational drugs. At FIGHTERS FOR THE WORLD, we fight, not for personal glory, but for the benefit of our community’s and, by extension, the nation and the planet. Our ultimate goal is to unite fighters from every discipline to work for causes greater than themselves. A more immediate goal is to develop a collaboration with you so that our organization can reach more of the kids in San Clemente who could really use our help.
